Chicago Police Cmdr. Paul Bauer was on duty when fatally shot

Bauer, who was downtown leaving training session, was shot after trying to help stop a man being pursued by tactical officers.

A memorial outside the Near North district station at 1160 N Larrabee is growing for the slain police officer who was killed at the Thompson Center on Tuesday afternoon.

Shomari Legghette, 44, was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, armed violence and possession of narcotics after police say they discovered he was carrying heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana. Bauer is the first Chicago police officer killed since 2011 and is "the highest-ranking officer killed in decades".

Bauer, 53, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has directed all entities governed by the Illinois Flag Display Act to fly both the United States and Illinois state flags at half-staff in remembrance of Chicago Police Commander Paul R. Bauer.

Johnson, who broke into tears while describing the incident, said that Bauer is survived by his wife and daughter.

There were initial media reports that the man may have been involved in the robbery of a local business, but Johnson did not provide details about what the man was doing that prompted officers to want to speak with him. Charlie Branda, the founder of Art on Sedgwick School in Chicago, who knew Bauer from one of his meetings, said it was hard to believe that the commander was no more.

The suspect, meanwhile, was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered.

Bauer, a veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was fatally wounded when he approached an armed suspect whose description had come over the police radio.

"We're not talking about the guy that stole a loaf of bread from the store to feed his family", Bauer told the Loop North News past year, according to the Tribune.

Two women who work at a bank in the Thompson Center said they heard shots and later saw a person being wheeled away on a stretcher with a sheet over him. We're talking about career robbers, burglars, drug dealers.

Bauer had recently criticized Chicago's justice system for what he saw as excessive lenience in prosecuting and jailing career criminals. Eddie Johnson, Guglielmi said.

It was initially reported that Bauer was off-duty, but police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter late Tuesday that Bauer was on-duty. "Maybe I'm jaded, I don't think that's anything to be proud of", he said.
