Toxic Metals Found in E-Cigarette Vapors

"It's important for the FDA, the e-cigarette companies and vapers themselves to know that these heating coils, as now made, seem to be leaking toxic metals - which then get into the aerosols that vapers inhale", said Ana Maria Rule, the study's senior author and assistant scientist.

In e-cigarettes, electric current passes through a metal coil to heat nicotine-containing "e-liquids", creating an aerosol-a mix including vaporized e-liquid and tiny liquid droplets. However, liquids in the e-cigarette tanks and aerosols contained higher levels.

Researchers aren't sure how these metals got from the coil to the smoke, but they don't think they could be coming from anywhere else.

They found that there wasn't much to worry about with the e-liquid itself - there were only minimal levels of risky metals like lead, chromium, and nickel and manganese.

During the study, researchers had worked on the sample which tells that the concentrations are higher than the limits based according to health habits by the EPA.

Although minimal levels of metals were found in the e-liquids within refilling dispensers, the metal contamination transferred to aerosols produced by heating the e-liquids. These metals have also been linked to cancer.

Iran teams find wreckage of plane
The European and US-based companies have agreed to sell 180 planes to Iran's state carrier service, IranAir. Iran has suffered several aviation accidents in recent years and has an ageing aircraft fleet.

Lead author Ana María Rule at the Bloomberg School's Department of Environmental Health and Engineering said, 'It's important for the e-cigarette companies and vapers themselves to know that these heating coils, as now made, seem to be leaking toxic metals-which then get into the aerosols that vapers inhale.

The most substantial culprit of this contamination, the researchers found, is nearly certainly the metal coil used to heat the e-liquid.

Vaping is increasingly becoming popular among teenagers, young adults, and existing smokers looking to quit smoking.

The study's authors tested three elements of the e-cigs: the liquid itself, the liquid inside of the vape pen's chamber, and the aerosol (or vapor). "We've established with this study that there are exposures to these metals, which is the first step, but we need also to determine the actual health effects", she says. It evaluated devices from a random sample of 56 users. And several studies have shown that vaping is far healthier than smoking.

"We don't know yet whether metals are chemically leaching from the coil or vaporising when it's heated", Ana added. "We found lower concentrations in e-cigarettes for cadmium and arsenic".

Researchers at John Hopkins University asked 56 daily e-cigarette users - recruited from vaping shops and conventions around Baltimore - to lend them their tank-style devices.
