Kushner, top officials meet in Mexico amid tensions

US presidential adviser Jared Kushner is in Mexico, trying to fix damaged ties.

The pair previously clashed in another tense telephone call shortly after Trump's inauguration during which the USA president repeatedly urged Peña Nieto to stop declaring that Mexico would not pay for a border wall. Videgaray was scheduled to accompany the Mexican head of state on that trip.

Security clearance has been a significant issue in recent weeks, ever since Rob Porter's departure from the White House over multiple allegations of domestic abuse.

Trump repeatedly declared both on the campaign trail and from the White House that Mexico would pay for a wall on the United States border to stop illegal immigration.

On Monday, as the latest round of the negotiations over a revamped North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) were wrapping up, Trump repeated that the trade deal was bad for the United States and that Mexico was not doing enough to stop drugs flowing into the country.

Gary Oldman's son defends star over domestic abuse allegations
In 2017, it was revealed that Oldman secretly married for the fifth time to Canadian writer and art curator Gisele Schmidt . Gary Oldman's son is defending the actor against domestic abuse allegations following his Best Actor win at the Oscars .

The meeting will center on immigration, trade, security and economics, a Trump administration official told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

Some analysts in Mexico view the visit as a chance to fix a key relationship and for Kushner, 37, to prove his value to the White House.

Kushner also is expected to meet with Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, CNBC reported.

Videgaray has maintained close ties with Kushner ever since, including several visits to the White House, most recently an unsuccessful effort to try to broker a Trump-Pena Nieto meeting.

According to The Washington Post, officials from both countries told the paper that Peña Nieto "called off the plan after Trump would not agree to publicly affirm Mexico's position that it would not fund construction of a border wall". Trump blames the decline in USA manufacturing jobs on the agreement. This article is strictly for informational purposes only.
