House Republicans end Russian Federation probe, says no Trump-Kremlin collusion

On a day when the White House press secretary declined to support the British prime minister Theresa May's conclusion that it is "highly likely" that Russian Federation was responsible for the poisoning of the former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, Conaway argued vehemently against the notion that the Trump campaign had cooperated with Russian Federation to disrupt the presidential election.

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee are handing over to Democrats a draft report on the probe into Russian interference in the last election for President, as the GOP found no evidence of any type of coordination or conspiracy between Russia and the Trump Campaign, ending what has been a protracted partisan battle on the panel about the Russia investigation.

Rep. Mike Conaway said the Republicans on the committee prepared a 150-page report that they'll let Democrats review on Tuesday. If the Trump campaign wasn't wittingly involved with the Russians then you don't have collusion at all, you just have Russian meddling. "We disagree with the narrative that they were trying to help Trump".

Conaway said that meeting "shouldn't have happened, no doubt about that".

Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the committee, slammed the Republican decision to end the investigation.

A Senate panel is still in the midst of its own investigation.

He made no immediate mention of the Democrats' objection.

The House probe has been marred from its early days by steadily rising hostility between Republicans and Democrats, a dynamic that grew into a crippling distraction. Schiff said that the House minority will "endeavor to continue their work".

"We think we have the evidence that we need now to come to the conclusion that we came to", Conaway said, adding that if compelling information surfaces down the line, he would consider reopening the probe.

"If youre determined not to find something, you can usually avoid finding it whether its there or not", said Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), who echoed many Democrats in accusing intelligence panel chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) of doing nothing but carrying water for the President.

At one point, Republicans considered erecting a wall in the committee's office to separate GOP and Democratic aides.

In recent days, several Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee had been openly calling to bring the investigation to a close, frustrated by the ceaseless tension on the panel, leaks from witness interviews and a climate of mistrust that had harmed the committee's historical ability to function in a bipartisan way.

"The Majority was not willing to pursue the facts wherever they would lead, would prove afraid to compel witnesses like Steve Bannon, Hope Hicks, Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump Jr., Corey Lewandowski and so many others to answer questions relevant to our investigation", Schiff continued.
