Hancock County jobless rate tied for third lowest

Maine's preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January is 3 percent, down from 3.1 percent in December and 3.4 percent in January 2017. Over the year, the county's employment rose 3 percent while jobs in the state overall were up 1.1 percent.

Miami and Fulton counties had unemployment rates of 4 percent. The Wichita M-S-A includes Sedgwick, Harvey, Butler, and Kingman counties.

The unemployment rates for Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha have not been seasonally adjusted, so they can not be directly compared with the state unemployment rate. Private service-providing industries, while overall down seasonally from December 2017, saw a 300 job gain from January 2017. The six New England states averaged 1 percent growth for the year, led by Rhode Island at 1.5 percent.

Hawaii had the lowest state unemployment rate in the nation in January, at just 2.1 percent. There were no big winners other than construction, with a 1 percent gain (28,600) jobs. Howard County's estimated unemployment stood at 3.5 percent for January.
