Tiger Woods at Arnold Palmer

Woods' is still on the hunt to be the greatest of all time and Jack Nicklaus record of 18 majors could be in danger once again.

The smile was quickly back on the 14-time major winner's face as he birdied the fourth and sixth, both par fives, and it remained firmly in place as he followed a poor tee shot on the par-three seventh by holing from 70 feet for an unlikely birdie.

"The narrative has completely flipped and I just wanted to remind you guys that it wasn't that long ago that you were asking a different set of questions and that you need to enjoy it. Those are moments that unfortunately I'll never have, but I have those memories", Woods told reporters ahead of Thursday's opening round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

"It's just playing tournament golf".

"From the time I first won there, to the other times I won the Green Jacket".

Coming off a tie for second at last week's Valspar Championship, Woods has raced into a share of the lead midway through the opening round at Florida's famed Bay Hill course.

Grouped with Woods was 2016 Bay Hill victor Jason Day, who struggled to a 73 courtesy of averaging 51 feet from the hole on approach shots.

But as we've seen so many times over the years with Tiger, the bounce was strong.

But the wheels appeared to come off early on his back nine when an out-of-bounds tee shot resulted in a double bogey six at the par-4 third.

Patrick Reed, who bogeyed the 72nd hole in the Valspar Championship to miss out on a play-off with Casey, was alongside Woods on four under, with England's Justin Rose a shot behind after a remarkable fightback.

"Just keep getting better", Woods said of his goals for the week.

"I just didn't give myself opportunities, it's pretty hard to make birdies from 51 feet and I didn't hole anything today", Day said.

"A lot of people are excited about how Tiger's starting to show signs in the right direction, and I think it's going to be a lot of fun over the next two days".
