"Black Panther" remains Number 1 for 5 Straight Weeks

Black Panther has grossed nearly $1.2 billion worldwide and more than $605 million domestically, and this past weekend, it became the first movie since James Cameron's Avatar to top the box office for five weeks in a row. The 2001 original opened $47.7 million and grossed $274.7 million worldwide, but the big-budget 2003 sequel flopped, opening with $21.8 million domestically and grossing $156.5 million worldwide.

While most films see a significant drop off after they're released, Black Panther has beaten the odds and continues to draw in support from fans, who've seen the film multiple times.

This is particularly the case in the USA, where Black Panther has just notched the accolade of being the top film in the country for the fifth weekend running.

Tomb Raider opened in second place with $23.5 million.

Lionsgate-Roadside Attractions' faith-based drama "I Can Only Imagine" outperformed forecasts with $17.1 million at 1,629 venues, notching the top per-screen average in the top 10 with $10,476.

Warner Bros.' fourth weekend of R-rated comedy "Game Night" took sixth place with $5.6 million at 2,686 locations, pushing its 24-day gross past $54 million. It is the first movie since Avatar to be at the top of the domestic box office for five straight weeks. The family-friendly Peter Rabbit added $5.2 million over the weekend to brings its six-week total to $102.4 million.

Rounding out the top five was "Love, Simon", led by Nick Robinson, Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Garner, earning an estimated $11.5 million. This gives the remake of the Charles Bronson exploitation film a three-week total of $29.9 million as it takes a final bow before presumably exiting the top ten. It's also the second-fastest film to earn $600 million domestically at 31 days, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which crossed that marker just 12 days after its release.
