First direct Australia to United Kingdom flight prepares for take off

Qantas flight QF9, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with more than 230 passengers and crew on board, touched down at 5.03am at Heathrow on a chilly Sunday morning to a welcome from ground staff.

It becomes the first regularly scheduled nonstop commercial airline service connecting Australia and Europe.

Leaving Sydney, it stopped in Darwin in northern Australia, Singapore, Calcutta in India, Karachi in Pakistan, Cairo in Egypt, Tripoli in Libya and, finally, London.

The new link is about three hours quicker than routes which involve stopping in the Middle East to change planes or refuel.

It is the world's second-longest after Qatar Airways' route from Doha to Auckland, which spans 14,529km.

After United Airlines started non-stop Singapore-Los Angeles flights last October, average ticket prices on one-stop rivals fell by 15 percent relative to 2016, according to Expedia Inc data provided to Reuters.

A free trip to Rottnest Island is being offered to the first group of travellers as the Western Australian government continues its new tourism push.

The number of ultra-long haul flights - those over 7,000 nautical miles (12,964 kilometres) - has almost tripled to 19 over the last decade, according to travel data provider OAG, as smaller, fuel-efficient twin-engine planes like Boeing Co's 787 and Airbus SE's A350 have entered service.

RS victory soothes Yogi's bruised ego, SP-BSP may huddle closer now
Meanwhile, UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya claimed that the SP-BSP alliance has proved to be a "complete failure". Soon after the results of the RS polls were announced on the TV channels, he came out to attack the SP-BSP alliance.

The days of non-stop travel to the other side of the world got one city closer over the weekend, with Qantas completing its first flight between Perth and London Heathrow.

Qantas plans to introduce non-stop flights from Australia's east coast to Britain in the next few years.

"We have been developing Terminal 3 to bring passengers new and exciting experiences and this new service from Qantas certainly enables that, being of real benefit to tourists, families and business travellers alike".

If both can do it, the airline will call for tenders next year and place an order, with the aircraft likely to be ready by 2022.

Australian airline Qantas pioneered the direct route, using a Boeing 787-9.

The QF9 daily flight begins in Melbourne with a stop in Perth before the nonstop leg to London.

"They're targeting the business community that wants a seamless journey", said Rico Merkert, professor of transport and supply-chain management at the University of Sydney's business school.
