Testing of self-driving trucks moves forward in Tucson after Uber fatality

Even though Uber had voluntarily halted self-driving vehicle tests nationwide, Arizona's Ducey on Monday ordered the company to stop tests in his state indefinitely.

Uber has reached a settlement with the family of the woman killed by a self-driving Uber in Arizona.

In December 2016, Uber had the registrations for 16 of its autonomous cars revoked by the state of California for testing the vehicles on the streets of San Francisco without obtaining the required permits.

In conversations between the state agency and Uber since the crash, "Uber has indicated that it will not renew its current permit to test autonomous vehicles in California", said the letter from Brian Soublet, DMV deputy director and chief counsel, to Austin Heyworth, a public affairs manager for Uber.

Uber Australia NZ general manager Henry Greenacre says UberPOOL will provide carpooling at the push of a button, which could help ease congestion and pollution. "I suspect preliminarily it appears that the Uber would likely not be at fault in this accident", he said, concluding that regardless of whether the vehicle was driven by a human or autonomously, "it's very clear it would have been hard to avoid this collision in any kind of mode based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway". The manufacturer of the software running in the auto, and of radars and sensors used on self-driving cars, Aptiv said in a statement that its safety systems had been disabled on the vehicle that killed the pedestrian.

"While we will await the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) report before drawing an official conclusion, our own analysis of released information leads us to be very concerned about Uber's system performance and human performance", he said.

Jim McPherson, a Benicia attorney and founder of SafeSelfDrive, an industry consultancy, pointed out that the federal investigation could easily take a year.

Investigators weren't able to verify Spotz's account, he said, prompting Robbery-Homicide detectives to take over the case. Last Thursday night, Spotz was spotted in the Tacoma in San Bernardino County and he fled when police tried to stop him.

But gubernatorial press aide Daniel Scarpinato said it wasn't just the pedestrian death that caused his boss, who had specifically urged companies to test the vehicles in Arizona, to have second thoughts. Are we to expect that none of these cars will face problems?

The settlement includes regular reporting of demographic data to Uber's workforce and to the court, as well as developing a validated promotion assessment process. After the tragedy, the company halted testing of its self-driving cars on roads in North America.

According to a report from the official Xinhua news agency on Wednesday, the test was recently completed in Xiongan, a new development zone created past year under direct orders from Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Ducey reacted to the news on Twitter with the message: "This is what OVER-regulation looks like! It was well known that companies were operating self-driving cars".

Doug Ducey (R) and Uber reportedly kept the company's controversial self-driving vehicle tests a secret, according to The Guardian. The new Uber driverless vehicle is armed with only one roof-mounted lidar sensor compared with seven lidar units on the older Ford Fusion models Uber employed, according to diagrams prepared by Uber.

"As long as human behaviors are the foundation of automated driving technology, safety will continue to be an issue", Shrivastava added. Three weeks ago, it started a free robot-taxi service for those employees to commute to and from work.
