SA ex-Prez Zuma charged with corruption

- April 2018: Zuma appears in Durban High Court for preliminary hearing, with the case adjourned until June 8.

The ANC on Friday once again called on members who wish to support former president Jacob Zuma during his court battle to do so in their private capacity.

However, the opponents of the ex-South African leader think that the court trial is long overdue.

Zuma, 75, smiled broadly and gave a thumbs-up as he walked into the Durban High Court building to take his seat in the dock just seven weeks after he was forced to resign from office.

The charges have been brought in relation to a 1990s arms deal.

He is accused of accepting 783 illegal payments. It came after his financial adviser Schabir Shaik was found guilty of fraud and corruption in relation to the arms deal and alleged corrupt dealing with Zuma in 2005.

Charges against Zuma relating to the arms deal were filed but then set aside by the NPA shortly before he successfully ran for president in 2009.

Thales, which supplied naval vessels as part of the deal, will also be charged with corruption and company representatives are expected to appear in court alongside Zuma.

The dispute over the fees represents a larger problem for the governing party, the African National Congress, or ANC, which must determine how strongly to back Zuma during his corruption trial.

Strong magnitude-5 natural disaster rocks Los Angeles sparking California 'Big One' fears
Seismologist Lucy Jones told NBC Los Angeles: "This is a completely normal sort of natural disaster for Southern California". Viewers with our sister station KABC reported feeling shaking in downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown and West Los Angeles.

Many say he has survived several controversies and criminal accusations until now because the ANC always came to his aid.

At the core is an allegation that Mr Zuma accepted a bribe to help Thales win a multi-million dollar government contract - allegations Mr Zuma denies.

South Africa's former President Jacob Zuma has been charged with corruption.

Many, he reports, see it as an era of impunity coming to an end.

Mr Ramaphosa came in on a ticket of clean governance and his party can not afford another scandal. But the Civil society and opposition parties have worked tirelessly to have the charges reinstated.

His rule was beset with a series of scandals, including claims of state looting. He later repaid the money.

After his resignation on February 14 this year, the leader of the ANC party and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in as president following parliamentary approval. He had been told to step down or face another vote of no-confidence in parliament.

"Hands off RET (radical economic transformation), hands off Zuma", read one brandished placard.
