Mexican president Pena Nieto to Trump: 'Threatening attitudes' are not justified

Trump and conservative media outlets have for days been railing on a so-called "caravan", aka a group of mostly migrant women and children traveling to the U.S.to flee violence in Central America.

Not only that, the Mexican government is deporting migrants at record numbers.

Organizers say Mexican immigration authorities are working with the migrants to get them papers to stay in Mexico.

Organizer Irineo Mujica said the group plans to head to Puebla, about 200 miles north, where migrants will meet with volunteer lawyers from the US who are expected to help them figure out whether they might qualify for asylum or other types of immigration relief in the United States.

"It really makes absolutely no sense to use this narrative that migrants, who are coming because of violence, are violent themselves, and then say that's why we need to close our border".

"I call for all political forces to unanimously show our strongest condemnation of these types of aggressions", he said in a statement.

Once again, President Trump has talked about rapists in Mexico, and left consternation and confusion in his wake.

The Zelaya siblings, from El Salvador, huddle together, part of a caravan of Central American migrants traveling in Mexico.

"About 80% of them are from Honduras", he said.

The country's Senate passed a resolution Wednesday calling on Mexico's government to suspend cooperation with the USA on illegal immigration and drug trafficking in retaliation for Trump's move.

"So we have to change our laws", he said.

Trump appeared to be saying that the caravan was somehow responsible for the rape of women. Rodrigo Abeja, one of the organizers, said help was being sought from a breakaway faction of Mexico's teachers union, which has years of experience convening large protests and is generally aligned with the country's leftist presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Jorge de Santiago, a maquiladora worker whose house sits right on the border, said of the deployment: "It looks bad, but it doesn't do much". Mujica said that "a minimum of 80 percent" of the migrants in the group are from Honduras.

"They crossed into the United States, or tried to". More than 20 people were killed in post-election protests, and Honduras has always been a unsafe place for activists.

On Wednesday, the Mexican Foreign Ministry reported that officials repatriated some 400 caravan migrants, sending them back to their native countries. "We thought it would be better to flee". Just two weeks ago Congress and President Trump approved an omnibus spending bill that includes $615 million for programs in Central American countries that address the root causes of out-migration and reform justice and security institutions. He has also threatened to reduce US aid to Honduras, the home country of numerous marchers.
