Trump Homeland Security Adviser Bossert Stepping Down

The White House said that Rob Joyce, cyber security coordinator, would replace Bossert as the acting homeland security adviser.

President Donald Trump's homeland security adviser, Mr Tom Bossert, will resign at the request of new National Security Adviser John Bolton, a person familiar with the matter said. "The president feels he's done great job and wishes him the best as he moves forward". He also said all options remained on the table with regard to a military response to Syria's recent chemical weapons attack. "Over the last 15 months I have enjoyed working with Tom on a range of current and emerging threats to our nation - particularly in cyber security and disaster response".

Bossert's resignation is in the latest high-level departure from the White House after the replacement of the secretary of state last month.

As recently as this weekend, Tom Bossert was being dispatched by the administration to the Sunday talk shows to defend Mr Trump's plan to send National Guard troops to the border.

Two days ago, Michael Anton announced his departure as spokesman for the National Security Council. A source close to Bolton said other departures might be upcoming as the new national security adviser builds his own team in some sectors.

Many critics, however, have said the administration's cyber policy was dogged by Trump's refusal to consistently acknowledge Russia's digital efforts to undermine the 2016 election. Bolton served as US permanent representative to the United Nations from 2005 to 2006, and as undersecretary of state for arms control and worldwide security from 2001 to 2005.

He was involved in cyber issues for the administration and also in the administration's response to a string of natural disasters in Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas past year.

That evening, Bossert was the keynote speaker at a conference of national security experts in Sea Island, Ga. He added: "At the end of the day the only thing that creates instability or the perception of it is (a) the coverage and (b) the turnover".
