Britain Joins France And US In Air Strikes In Syria

The U.S., United Kingdom and France launched targeted missile strikes on Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack by Bashar al-Assad's regime on a rebel-held suburb of Damascus.

Director of the Joint Staff Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie confirmed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad still maintains "residual" capacity.

Experts from the world's global chemical arms watchdog are continuing their mission to probe an alleged gas attack in Douma despite Western air strikes in Syria, the body said Saturday.

The army said almost 110 missiles hit targets in the capital Damascus and other areas, and air defence systems brought majority down.

The missile strikes took place as a team of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is in Damascus to probe the alleged chemical incident in Douma last week.

Trump had tweeted a similar statement last Sunday, saying that Russian Federation and Iran are responsible for backing Assad's regime.

Trump said the strikes were in coordination with France and the United Kingdom, adding that the objective of the campaign is to "establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons".

As pictures of the bombing raids aftermath continue to emerge, Mr Trump said he "could not have had a better result".

"The goal of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons", Trump said.

The attack set Syria's chemical weapons program back "for years", Pentagon officials said. "We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents".

Four hurricane names retired following devastation
A Category 5 storm at its height, Irma killed more than 100 people and devastated the island of Barbuda and the US Virgin Islands. Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 storm in late August and dropped more than 60 inches of rain over Texas.

The Secretary-General also said that global investigators are ready to visit the site of the suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria's Douma, and that several militias and armies are fighting proxy wars in Syria.

Pentagon officials said Friday night that Syrian forces returned fire with surface-to-air missiles, but initial assessments were that allied forces suffered no losses.

The United States struck the base with 58 missiles in response to the chemical attack that killed more than 80 people.

The UK has begun air strikes against Syrian chemical weapons sites.

Obama gave a speech saying the United States should act against Syria but said congress should authorize any military action - congress didn't act.

Still, the strikes Friday risk drawing the USA deeper into the Syrian conflict, and could further heighten tensions between the US and Russian Federation, which threatened earlier in the week to shoot down any US missiles launched at the Syrian government.

"As always, we oppose the use of force in global relations and call for respect for other countries' sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity", a spokesperson for the Chinese government said.

Earlier, US Defence Secretary James Mattis said the airstrikes were a "one-time shot" to send a strong message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"Kremlin's support of Damascus's crimes can not be left without attention, as the Kremlin's regime with its actions, including in the UN Security Council, consistently makes it impossible to solve the conflict in Syria in accordance with the UN Charter", the statement says.

Russia's ambassador to the United States responded by saying the attack on its ally "will not be left without consequences".
