National School Walkout: Is your school planning a protest against gun violence?

A planned national high school walkout for gun control on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting Friday won't include student protests at the Colorado school that changed the way the nation viewed shootings. Therefore, VBCPS staff will neither encourage nor discourage students from taking part in a walkout, or, as the principal of Columbine High School suggests, honoring victims by taking part in community service. The National Day of Action Against Gun Violence in Schools, organized by the Network for Public Education, CTA and the National Education Association on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine school massacre, sends a strong, unified message to politicians urging them to take measures to address safety indefinitely. It's the third mass student-led anti-gun-violence event since the February 14 high school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead.

Given these circumstances, I want to stress that Friday, April 20 remains a regular school day as scheduled on the school calendar. Community and police-driven gun violence hit hard for teens in urban areas, many of whom have lost family members, friends, or classmates to shootings.

Bowes added "Normal instruction will continue during any voluntary organized activity on campus, and students who choose to participate in planned campus activities are expected to return to class following those events".

Ten days later, on March 24, student activists in some 800 cities across the USA and around the world led massive marches that drew thousands in support of the gun control cause.

Students from at least two Dayton high schools are organizing the rally at the Lincoln Park Civic Commons at Fraze Pavilion.

"He worked with us and said we could maybe do something during lunch, but we chose to organize it after school so that we can gather an audience of people who genuinely want to be there", Basilone said in a text message. "We want to keep it in a positive light".

Allegiant Air responds to critical "60 Minutes" report
According to its website, Allegiant Air has nearly 130 flights to and from destinations in the United States and Puerto Rico. The five, who were interviewed on camera, detailed experiences ranging from disappointment to anger to trauma.

Now, schools can punish students involved with the walkout.

"If they decide to stay on campus and are not disruptive and re-enter the building cooperatively, that will likely be handled in the same manner as the walk out that occurred last month", Quattlebaum said.

Those who leave campus may be subject to disciplinary actions in both school districts, according to statements from both school systems.

Lane Murdock, a sophomore, founded the group.

Some local students will join thousands of others across the country Friday morning to protest gun violence. Students will also be given the chance to register to vote.
