Donald Trump Considering Posthumous Pardon to Boxer Jack Johnson

"His trials and tribulations were great, his life complex and controversial", Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

Could Jack Johnson receive a presidential pardon more than 70 years after his death? Johnson first became the heavyweight champion in 1908 when he beat Tommy Burns in a fight in Sydney, Australia. Coined the "Fight of the Century", Jeffries lost to Johnson on July 4, 1910, in Reno, Nevada, after 15 rounds.

Most famously, his story was fictionalized for the play "The Great White Hope", starring James Earl Jones, which won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony Award for best play in 1969.

His rise occurred in the midst of the Jim Crow era, where the lynching of black men was all too common. Johnson was black, his girlfriend was white. Jess Myron Willard was capable of beating Johnson in Havana, Cuba, in April 1915 in the 26th round, the New York Post reported. Willard took the title with a knock-out in the 26th round and held onto it until 1919.

Lawyers for the Justice Department at the time argued that Johnson's relationship with a white woman was a "crime against nature". An all-white jury convicted him in 1913 for transporting a woman across state lines for "immoral purposes", which was illegal under the Mann Act. The Mann Act purported to prevent human trafficking for the objective of prostitution, but critics have argued it was applied inconsistently to criminalize African Americans and those with dissenting political views.

UK Supreme Court denies Alfie Evans' appeal, ventilator to be removed Monday
The judges' decision brings to an end a series of challenges made in the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Judges said no detail of the plan could be made public because Alfie was entitled to privacy as his life came to a close.

Johnson returned to the U.S.in 1920 to serve his sentence and was released almost one year later.

He finally returned to the U.S.in 1920 to face charges. He was released in 1921 and continued to box professionally after his release from prison and died at the age of 68 in 1946.

"Despite this resolution passing both chambers of Congress several times in recent years, no pardon has been issued to date", McCain said in a statement at the time.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has been calling for a pardon for Johnson since 2004, and criticized President Obama for leaving office in 2017 without having granted one.

Advocates for Johnson have long pushed for a posthumous pardon, including USA officials like Sen.
