Global cues, index heavyweights lift equities; metals slump

Benchmark Sensex fell over 115 points while the Nifty closed below 10,600 today amid weak global cues and unabated foreign fund outflows. Earlier, the gauge had gained 35.19 points in the previous session.

Mumbai: The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex opened lower by 52.82 points at 34,563.82 and the broader NSE Nifty 50 fell 21.10 points to 10,593.30 on Wednesday.

Among sectoral sub-indices, pharma rallied the most at 1.5 per cent while metal lost nearly 0.80 per cent.

The rupee, meanwhile depreciated 21 paise to 66.59 against the United States dollar today at the interbank foreign exchange due to appreciation of the greenback amid rising USA bond yields and surge in global crude oil prices.

The BSE Information Technology index rose the most-1.24% or 163 points to 13,360 level. China's Shanghai Composite gained 2 percent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.3 percent while Japan's Nikkei rose 0.9 percent.

The major Sensex gainers on Tuesday were: RIL, up 3.70 per cent at Rs 969.75; Yes Bank, up 3.31 per cent at Rs 323.40; M&M, up 1.94 per cent at Rs 838.45; Adani Ports, up 1.74 per cent at Rs 391.95; and ICICI Bank, up 1.66 per cent at Rs 284.20.
