Golden State Killer suspect caught and identified as former police office

He's also charged with raping and killing 28-year-old Manuela Witthuhn in 1981 and 18-year-old Janelle Cruz in 1986. DeAngelo was taken into custody without incident.

According to police, DeAngelo is responsible for as many as 12 murders and upwards of 50 rapes during a reign of terror that gripped California in the 70s and 80s. She died in her sleep in 2016 at age 46.

Oswalt helped finish the book and it became a No. 1 New York Times best-seller. Authorities said they were looking into whether he committed any of the alleged Golden State Killer-related crimes while on duty as an officer.

Diane Peterson, a retired teacher, said Wednesday that theories about who was behind the rapes and home intrusions have remained a topic of conversation in the neighborhood in the four decades since the attacks began.

A break in the case and the arrest came together in "light speed" during the past six days, Schubert said, though authorities refused to reveal what led them to DeAngelo.

"He was very surprised by that", Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said. A home in that community belonging to a former police officer was being searched Wednesday by FBI investigators and police from several agencies.

Jones said DeAngelo was an officer in two small-town California police departments during the 1970s - Exeter and Auburn.

Most of the early attacks occurred in the Sacramento area, but DNA evidence also connected the suspect to a series of rapes and murders in the San Francisco Bay region and the southern part of the state.

That serial killer is tied to at least 12 homicides, 45 rapes and dozens of burglaries across California. Neighbors said he mostly kept to himself, but was quick to anger and could often be heard loudly cussing in frustration over a landscaping issue or other minor annoyance. "And he is history", said Bruce Harrington, the brother of Keith Harrington who along with his wife Patrice was killed in their home back in 1980.

It was discarded DNA that confirmed, "We had our man", Jones said at a news conference Wednesday. At the time he was 31 years old when his 29-year-old wife was assaulted on September 16, 1977.

The suspect was also known as the "East Area Rapist" and "the Original Night Stalker".

Totten says prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the former police officer. "This case deeply affected this entire state".

DeAngelo had been living in the Sacramento area since the serial attacks that terrorized Californians from 1974 to 1986.

"The answer has always been in Sacramento", Schubert said.

The FBI says it has a team gathering evidence at a Sacramento-area home linked to DeAngelo.

McNamara seemingly foreshadowed the arrest in a chilling piece of writing, "letter to an old man" at the end of her book, which was released in February.

"I just found out this morning", she told The Island Packet newspaper. "Even though she didn't believe in closure, she did understand that the physical act of knowing that a cell door was slamming on this guy would be really, really helpful to these people".

At one point, McNamara listened to Holes as he said, "What sets him apart from other offenders is going into the house".

"These cases are some of the most horrific I've had to investigate", Erika Hutchcraft, an investigator for the Orange County District Attorney's Office, told CNN.

District Attorney's spokeswoman Shelly Orio says a news conference will be held Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento to make "a major announcement".

Federal Bureau of Investigation and California officials in 2016 renewed their search for the attacker dubbed the East Area Rapist and announced a $50,000 reward for his arrest and conviction.

Then-Citrus Heights resident Jane Carson-Sandler was sexually assaulted at knifepoint by a man believed to be the East Area Rapist in 1976.
