Mateo Kovacic preferred to Casemiro as Real Madrid welcome Bayern Munich

In the UEFA Champions League semifinals leg 2, the teams Real Madrid and Bayern Munich face each other today. After scoring five goals last season against Bayern in the quarterfinal, Cristiano Ronaldo was rather quiet in the first leg. Ronaldo could send Real Madrid to their third straight final if he has a big second leg.

Bale was not used in the first leg, even as a substitute, and retains his spot on the bench as Real try to hold onto a 2-1 advantage from their first-leg win in Germany.

Real Madrid head into the match with a 2-1 lead, the winning strike coming from Marco Asensio who came on from the bench a week ago to complete a Real Madrid comeback after they were 1-0 at half time.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane admitted that his team are preparing for a full-throttle attack by Jupp Heynckes' Bayern who have nothing to lose in the return leg at Madrid.

Navas had to get down low to keep out a Muller header as Madrid's nerves were further jangled, but a defence that never looked secure withstood the pressure to put Los Blancos within 90 minutes of a fourth European crown in five seasons.

The 35-year-old Ribery was one of the few Bayern stars to shine in the defeat at the Allianz Arena.

Also, on the 49 occasions they have played a knockout first leg at home they have progressed 38 times. Sergio Ramos should have dealt with it but failed to clear and Kimmich pounced from close range. Madrid conceded twice more but eventually advanced thanks to Ronaldo's injury-time penalty.

James almost got his second goal about ten minutes later as he wound up at the top of the goal, but defender Raphael Varane made an important stop by throwing his body in front of James' attempt.

Bayern wasn't done yet and Rodriguez equalized in the 63rd with a low shot from inside the area.

"We had the upper hand, we had chance after chance, but we didn't take them and that cost us", Bayern defender Mats Hummels said.

"We need to be more efficient than in the first leg", Heynckes said.

Madrid hosts Bayern in the second leg on Tuesday, but the European champion has struggled in decisive matches at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and is wary of more surprises.
