Trump warns Americans their rights to own guns are 'under siege'

Trump says the strongest deterrent to would-be gun attackers is "the knowledge that their attack will end their life and end in total failure".

During his speech, the president also vowed not to tighten United States gun laws despite suggesting after the Parkland, Florida school shooting that he would take on the powerful gun-rights group. "We can not get complacent".

Trump concluded his speech saying, "Americans are born free, we will live free and we will die free".

Just a few days later, though, he met with the NRA's top lobbyist, Chris Cox, and Vice President Mike Pence at the White House.

But Friday's speech was his first appearance before NRA members since the February 14 mass shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school that created a new wave of momentum for the gun-control movement nationwide led by the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"I recently read a story that in London, which has unbelievably tough gun laws, a once very prestigious hospital, right in the middle, is like a war zone for terrible stabbing wounds", he said.

The president spoke for about 58 minutes ending his speech to the crowd: "We will never fail and we will always protect your second amendment".

Trump's appearance comes after he temporarily strayed from NRA dogma opposing stronger gun control after the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, earlier this year - only to return to the fold.

For Robbie Malone, a Dallas-based attorney, Trump's presidency signals a new era of respect for gun owners.

But after expressing interest in increasing the minimum age to purchase an assault weapon to 21, Trump later declared there was "not much political support" for that.

But Trump did spend some time on the topic at hand - guns and the Second Amendment.

President Donald Trump takes the stage to speak Friday at the National Rifle Association convention in Dallas, where he told the audience that Second.

"I'm excited for his support of the Second Amendment, and his staunch support of the NRA, even through all this craziness that's been going on and the vilification of the NRA that's been going on", she said. Trump, at one point, seemed to flirt with distancing himself from the group's policies, telling members of Congress in February they should feel free to defy the NRA in passing a comprehensive school safety package.

The president is imploring NRA members to help elect Republicans in the November elections.

Controversially, though, Trump also advocates arming teachers as a first line of defense against school shooters, echoing the NRA s claim that "the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is good guy with a gun".

The NRA's relationship with the president was further complicated after a McClatchy report in January that us authorities are investigating whether the group funneled Russian money into the 2016 presidential election.

Giuliani revealed Wednesday that Trump had reimbursed his attorney Michael Cohen's $130,000 payment to Daniels, the adult film star who alleges she had an affair with Trump.

Trump also said he has a "record crowd" attending the convention.

"Our gun rights are in danger, but I do think that Trump is on our side", a Texas resident clad in an NRA hat, said.
