Lawyers for Michael Cohen on Wednesday accused an attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels of distributing false information about their client and asked a federal judge to deny his request to participate in a litigation in NY about a federal criminal investigation involving President Donald Trump's longtime attorney.

Swiss drugmaker Novartis and United States telecommunications giant AT&T on Wednesday said they made payments to Cohen's firm, Essential Consultants, in efforts to gain intelligence into the Trump administration's thinking on issues affecting them.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders referred questions about Cohen to Trump's outside counsel, but said Cohen's private business dealings did not involve the administration.

In April, Mueller had the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid Cohen's office and home to find information about his payment to Daniels and other payments that could be considered violations to campaign finance law.

Cohen's attorneys argue that Avenatti, in his report, used bank records and information about a Michael Cohen who is a Canadian in Tanzania and another Michael Cohen in Israel.

In a letter to U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood, who is overseeing proceedings in a federal criminal probe of Cohen, Cohen's attorneys from the firm McDermott Will & Emery said the report Avenatti published Tuesday contains incorrect statements that have nothing to do with Daniels' defamation lawsuit against Cohen relating to $130,000 he paid to keep her quiet about an alleged affair with Trump years ago.

And they said that he misrepresented money paid to Cohen by Columbus Nova, a New York-based investment firm linked to Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who attended Trump's inauguration.

Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels in the adult film industry. But he says the contract couldn't be terminated, so Novartis kept paying Cohen's company, Essential Consultants, for a full year.

Both Novartis and AT&T acknowledge hiring Cohen.

"If Mr. Ryan/Mr. Cohen dispute the receipt of almost $2MM from Columbus Nova, Korea Aero, Novartis or ATT (as opposed to insignificant amounts), they should state it NOW".

"In hindsight, this must be seen as a mistake", Novartis spokesman Michael Willi told Reuters, making sure to note that the arrangement was struck under former CEO Jimenez and in no way connected to new CEO Vas Narasimhan.

"I mean, this would seem to be in the heart of the Russian Federation investigation, and yet Mueller gave it to somebody else", York continued.

Columbus Nova is the U.S. affiliate of a corporate empire belonging to Viktor Vekselberg, a Russian oligarch closely linked to Vladimir Putin.

"Mr. Avenatti has published some information that appears to be from Mr. Cohen's actual bank records, and Mr. Cohen has no reason to believe that Mr. Avenatti is in lawful possession of these records", the filing said.

Her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, alleged $4 million was poured into Essential's coffers from several major corporations.

Novartis and AT&T said they were contacted by the office of US Special Counsel Robert Mueller about the situation in late 2017, and provided all the information requested.

The statement began: "In early 2017, as President Trump was taking office, we hired several consultants to help us understand how the President and his administration might approach a wide range of policy issues important to the company, including regulatory reform at the FCC, corporate tax reform and antitrust enforcement". Nevertheless, the drug company paid him $1.2million for a one-year contract that ended in February. "Since then, we have received no additional questions from the Special Counsel's office and consider the matter closed".

After the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Cohen's home, office and hotel in April, Mueller issued a referral to the U.S. Attorney's office in the Southern District of NY. The latest twist, according to Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti, finds that a Russian oligarch paid $500,000 to Cohen to gain access to Trump, with speculation running rampant about whether or not those funds were used to repaid the "hush money".
