Polanski slams #MeToo as 'collective hysteria' and 'hypocrisy'

The Academy-award winning director Roman Polanski threatened to take legal action against the Academy after it voted May 3 to expel him from its ranks.

In a letter sent to the academy this week, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, Polanski's attorney Harland Braun said the body that hands out the Oscars had failed to follow proper procedure in deciding to expel his client without a hearing, as required by law.

But before the academy kicked Polanski out, the director gave an interview with the Polish edition of Newsweek.

"I think this is the kind of mass hysteria that occurs in society from time to time", he said. "I think they thought this was an easy one - an 84-year old director's not going to fight it, right?"

He said everyone is trying to sign up to #MeToo "chiefly out of fear" and compared it to North Korea's public mourning for its leaders that is so intensive that "you can't stop laughing".

Olszewski told The Associated Press that stripping the famed auteur of his Academy membership bore signs of "psychological abuse of an elderly person" for "populist goals".

She also said that her son with Bloom, Flynn , is eager to assume the role of big brother. The happy news came just months after the couple tied the knot, in May of a year ago .

But wait: There's more!

Braun said the only notice Polanski had received from the academy was an unsigned letter informing him he was expelled.

Polanski, who called the decision last week "the height of hypocrisy", is set to appeal, his lawyer said.

The academy's board of governors cited their "Standards of Conduct" in the announcement regarding Cosby and Polanski's removal.

What is the biggest criticism of #MeToo, the social movement that has swept America since the Harvey Weinstein revelations in 2017, encouraging women to speak out about their experiences with sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct?

And, at the time, ThinkProgress asked, pointedly: So, what about Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski (not to mention accused sexual harasser and last year's best actor victor Casey Affleck, who remains a member in good standing)?
