Aliso Viejo blast: Mystery explosion kills woman in Orange County California

Officials said the blast appeared to be an intentional act caused by a package that specifically targeted the office where the explosion occurred.

The Tuesday blast in Aliso Viejo, situated about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles, killed one woman and injured three other people.

The official said the information was based on a preliminary investigation.

But police have not confirmed this and they say no device was found.

The official, who was briefed on the investigation, was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Orange County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Carrie Braun says investigators worked through the night and were still at the scene Wednesday morning.

No children were hurt, officials said.

Orange County sheriff's detectives - along with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - were continuing to investigate on Wednesday the cause of the powerful explosion in an Aliso Viejo office building that the day before that left a woman dead and three others injured.

The siding on the two-story building's walls and the entire bottom floor were blown out, and windows had been shattered.

Mary McWilliams of San Clemente tells the Orange County Register that she saw two women with burns stagger out of the building.

If it sat at the heart of our own galaxy, researchers say the supermassive black hole would wipe out any chance of life on Earth. Astronomers believe they may form when a large cloud of gas up to 100,000 times bigger than the sun, collapses into a black hole.

Shin said he also saw "fire, smoke, insulation popping out of the walls, a lot of scared people running around, a lot of commotion". Police investigators and FBI agents are studying the causes of the explosion, and they assure that there is no lingering threat to the community.

Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes said authorities believe the victim who was killed in Tuesday's blast was Ildiko Krajnyak, 40, of Trabuco Canyon.

One woman was killed and three other people were injured in Tuesday afternoon's explosion in Aliso Viejo.

However, he says no explosive device has been found in the building and investigators still aren't saying whether the explosion was accidental or intentional.

Mary McWilliams tells the Orange County Register that she arrived for an appointment Tuesday in Aliso Viejo to find smoke surrounding the area and vehicle alarms going off. McWilliams says one woman had skin peeling on her arm. The other woman was bleeding from her head.

According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the blast originated from the first floor of the building.

"We have not confirmed that the explosion is intentional, nor have we conclusively identified the source of the explosion".

The identity of the female victim who was killed, has yet to be released.

"We do not believe at this time that it was an accident", he said.

The explosion sparked a fire in the building about 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, but it was quickly doused after a large-scale response by fire and sheriff's officials. OCFA said a bomb squad was sent in to assess the situation and investigate the cause of the blast. They were being reunited with parents at a nearby store parking lot.
