We knew Solo: A Star Wars Story was going to feature legacy Star Wars characters Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich), Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), but there's technically another legacy character who's been hiding in plain sight in the new movie. The Marvel blockbuster is looking at a $16.9 million three-day estimate, along with a four-day number of $22.1 million.

Overseas ticket sales are even lower.

The Han Solo origin film began its worldwide run with a dismal $65 million this weekend. The movie took in $14.1 million at Thursday night previews, a record for Memorial Day (beating "At World's End", which took in $13.2 million).

"There's a ton of momentum in the box office", Dave Hollis, president of domestic distribution at Disney, said of the trio of recent openings - "Solo", "Avengers: Infinity War", and " Deadpool 2". But the studio has been developing its slate of character-driven standalone Star Wars films for a while now.

Indiana School Shooting Leaves Teacher and Student Wounded
Aerial news video showed rows of students being evacuated and escorted to school buses. "Indianapolis stands with Noblesville". The Carmel Fire Department wrote on Twitter that first responders were headed to the scene and that a suspect was in custody.

Disney is also competing with itself to some extent. Fans might argue that stingers would feel out of place in Star Wars-for decades, these movies have been over when the credits started to roll and the iconic theme music kicked in. While reviews were generally positive (71 percent "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes), there was little about "Solo" that made the movie a must-see event.

One the one hand, that's not a huge dent to Solo's opening days in theaters.

But the cause of the spinoff's disappointing performance may have had as much to do with "Star Wars" fatigue ("The Last Jedi" exited theaters just last month) and the stiffer competition of a summer holiday weekend. Watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars and even then you'll not have the full store because this is clearly a lead-in to something else, somewhere. It's a much more competitive time at multiplexes than December, which has been the home for "Star Wars" movies since "The Force Awakens".

The character, which has a unique look with a fearsome mask and rocket pack on its back, has been aggressively marketed via toys, comics, video games and more.
