Hermitage Capital Management founder Bill Browder, who's led a global campaign to encourage governments to sanction the Kremlin over human-rights abuses, was was briefly detained by Spanish police in response to a Russian warrant issued through Interpol.

A national police spokeswoman said Browder was released when agents confirmed that an arrest warrant from Russian Federation that appeared in police databases was invalid. "They won't tell me which station", the tweet reads.

The financier, who is a plaintiff in the Spanish investigation, said Spain is among 15 countries following the money trail.

In December, a Russian court convicted Browder in absentia of deliberate bankruptcy and tax evasion and sentenced him to nine years in prison, Reuters reported, citing the country's general prosecutor.

Mr Browder, a US-born British national, has been a thorn in the side of the Russian authorities for more than a decade after he tried to expose the "looting" of his investments in the country by corrupt officials.

A police auto is seen outside the police station where British businessman Bill Browder, a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was taken to when he was detained and then released by Spanish police in Madrid, May 30, 2018. In an image of a detention report posted by Browder himself on Twitter, police identified the reason for the detention as "fraud".

According to the publication, the warrant for Browder's arrest had expired.

Mr Browder has written a book called Red Notice: How I Became Putin's No.1 Enemy.

Interpol denied the claim and said, "Mr Browder is not wanted via Interpol channels". He renounced his American citizenship in 1998 to avoid having to pay USA taxes, and became a British citizen.

He was put on trial in absentia in 2013 for tax evasion - in the same trial where the deceased Magnitsky faced charges, which was labelled "absurd" by observers.

Mr Johnson said "Moscow should concentrate on bringing those responsible for the murder of Mr Magnitsky to justice".
