Starbucks to Close This Afternoon for Employee Training

The Starbucks CEO's comments come just hours after he offered racial sensitivity training to almost 175,000 employees; a direct response to a store manager's decision weeks ago to call the police on two African American men who were waiting to use the restroom.

The store manager then called police to report that the two men were refusing to leave, and moments later the two men were arrested for trespassing. Starbucks cafes located within other businesses, such as airports, bookstores, grocery stores and department stores, remained open, but employees there had access to the racial-bias training materials, according to the company. On Tuesday, May 29, 2018, the company plans to close more than 8,000 stores nationwide to conduct anti-bias training, a move meant to show how serious the company is about living up to its now tarnished image as a neighborhood hangout where all are welcome.

Starbucks stores in downtown Honolulu, as well as at Ward Village, Ala Moana, Waikiki, Kahala and most standalone retail locations will all close at 2:30 p.m.

We also spoke to a Starbucks employee, who did not want to be identified.

One page of the notebooks had the heading "What makes me, me and you, you?" After watching videos, the employees held discussions in small groups. The video of Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson being arrested quickly went viral last month, prompting the company to apologize.

Starbucks says the afternoon training session is not mandatory - but that employees are "invited and encouraged" to attend. Employees will talk about their own experiences, and watch a film about bias.

It's unclear exactly what the company's several-hour racial bias training session entails because media wasn't allowed to spectate. "After May 29, we will make the curriculum available to the public and share it with the regions as well as our licensed and business partners". Heather McGhee, president of Demos, an equal rights thinktank, contributed, as did the former United States attorney general Eric Holder and representatives of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education fund.

The pair also reached a separate deal with Philadelphia, for $1 each and the promise of a public high school program for young entrepreneurs.
