Google reportedly not renewing contract for Project Maven drone program

According to a trustworthy source that CNN has approached, Google has apparently decided not to renew the Pentagon contract, which was made for Project Maven.

Google Cloud CEO Diane Greene announced the decision at a meeting with employees Friday morning, three sources told Gizmodo.

The code name for a Department of Defense (DoD) Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team (AWCFT), Project Maven is an artificial intelligence (A.I.) program at present a work in progress. Unfortunately for Greene, mass upheavals forced her to tactfully reassess.

Google, hoping to head off a rebellion by employees upset that the technology they were working on could be used for lethal purposes, will not renew a contract with the Pentagon for artificial intelligence work when a deal expires next year.

After one month, around twelve Google representatives have chosen to leave as a type of challenge over Google's proceeded with support in the military venture known as Project Maven.

If Google is indeed ending its involvement in the military drone project, it could as a result of the staff letter, and the fact that at least a dozen people reportedly resigned over the issue.

The 12-year partnership involves the development of a new PGA Tour-branded video streaming service, the company said. While known for unscripted programming like "Shark Week", Discovery is focused on becoming a global TV sports giant.

Google had faced backlash from employees over it's involvement in Maven, an artificial itelligence (AI)-powered US Defence Department project.

Gizmodo reviewed internal emails that showed executives viewed Project Maven as an exciting opportunity to expand its work with the military, but wanted to keep the project under wraps because of concern about how it would impact the company's brand image.

So far Google has tried downplaying the significance of Project Maven.

Following Google's public confirmation of the partnership in March, more than 4,000 Google employees signed a petition demanding that the company back out of the contract, reminding executives of the company's longstanding motto, "Don't be evil". In an open letter addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai, Google employees expressed concern that the USA military could weaponize AI and apply the technology towards refining drone strikes and other kinds of lethal attacks.

But Google has also been facing outside pressure.
