Umtiti to sign new five-year deal with Barca

Umtiti to sign new five-year deal with Barca

Just last week, Umtiti said: "It is clear that I want to renew my contract at Barcelona and I hope to be with the team next season".

After months of negotiating, Barcelona finally announced an agreement with Umtiti had been reached by issuing a statement early on Sunday evening.

Umtiti joined Barcelona for £21.9m from Lyon in 2016 and quickly established himself alongside Gerard Pique as the club's first-choice defensive partership.

It's evident that with such a high clause, Barcelona are confident that Umtiti will remain at the club for a long time.

Manchester United may have boasted a statistically strong defensive unit this past season - they conceded the second fewest goals in the Premier League - but the second half of the season saw them pose a vulnerable look at the back.

Catalonia government sworn in, ending Madrid's direct rule
Mr Sánchez is opposed to another independence referendum in Catalonia, but wants talks on the situation in the prosperous region. But they have very different targets, with Spain's Socialists, who had backed Rajoy's Catalonia policy, opposing independence.

After Manchester City and Liverpool spent big on defenders Aymeric Laporte and Virgil van Dijk, respectively, in January, Manchester United were linked with a move for Umtiti.

The Cameroon-born France international's new deal ties him to the LaLiga champions until 2023, and he put pen to paper in an official ceremony at the Nou Camp on Monday morning.

Umtiti is part of Didier Deschamps' 23-man France squad for this summer's World Cup.

Sergio Busquets is also in line for a new contract but Barcelona will now turn their attention to bringing in new players.
