IOS 12: the best features coming soon to an iPhone near you

Apple Software VP Craig Ferguson said that the company will specifically develop measures targeting Facebook's use of "like" and "share" data, which has been applied to track and monitor user activity without their knowledge.

In fact, Apple was fairly forthcoming in calling out the practices of "data companies", practices that put or weaken privacy of users, at its developer event. On iOS, you'll see how you and your family use your i-devices to figure out.well, where all that time you spent watching YouTube or scrolling Facebook went. "What we did was we integrated the ability to share in the operating system, make it simple to share a photo and that sort of thing", he said, adding that "We weren't in the data business".

Apple has said new operating systems powering its devices will include features created to thwart the use of secret trackers to monitor people's online activities.

To counter this, Apple will present web pages with less details about the computer, the BBC report said.

Perhaps the most interesting part of WWDC came towards the end when Apple took a clear sideswipe at Facebook.

Parents can give their children screen time allowances - a specific amount of time they can play a video game or check in with friends on apps such as Snapchat.

Apple, kicking off its annual developers conference, appeared to be setting itself apart from Facebook, which has drawn the ire of privacy activists, and even showed how its software could prevent the social network from tracking users on Apple devices. It now features a "Reminder" that enables users to set a time alarm to remind them about having a break. While Facebook generates revenue from ads targeted with detailed information about users, Apple makes most of its money selling hardware products. Facebook said the pacts were designed to help device makers create their own versions of Facebook apps, and the data mostly remained on phones that accessed it.

Apple has unveiled new features to help users control how often they use their phones. The app will track and chart how you use your iDevice and send you weekly reports that will no doubt bum you out.

"The things mentioned in the Times article about relationship status, all these kinds of things, is so foreign to us, and not data that we have ever received at all or requested - zero", Cook told NPR.
