Muguruza thrashes Sharapova to reach French Open semi-finals

"And I think we played many matches". She will face either world number one Simona Halep or Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.

No. 28 Maria Sharapova had a good run at this year's French Open, but she fell short in her first quarterfinal match since the 2016 Australian Open after running into defending Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza. There were no such fireworks this time, though, with Halep sealing a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Kerber again failed to serve out the set after breaking back for 6-5 as Halep forced a breaker.

Halep has only dropped one set en route to the last eight, back at the start of the tournament when she lost the opening set of her first-round clash with American Alison Riske. Muguruza has won seven of her last nine matches on clay court.

Halep started slowly, spraying shots wide as she lost the first four games of the match against the number 12 seed who hit her early groundstrokes with lethal accuracy. Halep is having a lot of success with her return and is doing a better job of putting mistakes in the past rather than letting them impact the rest of her game.

The signs were ominous when the five-times Grand Slam champion coughed up three nervy double-faults in the opening game.

Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Sharapova didn't need to play a point in the fourth round, because Serena Williams pulled out of their much-anticipated match with an injured chest muscle.

"I think it would be unusual for me not to include someone that I have competed against for so many years", said the 31-year-old.

But by the third set Halep had broken the German's defenses - and her resolve - as she banged in 76 percent of her first serves, with only half the unforced errors of her opponent. It would be very unusual, I think, if I didn't write anything about her.

Muguruza raced to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Muguruza essentially got that round off, too: Her opponent, Lesia Tsurenko, quit with an injury after only two games. ". Coming into this part of the year, I was losing a few first-round matches, matches that I wanted to be winning, of course".

It ranked among one of the most lopsided losses ever suffered by Sharapova in her Grand Slam career.
