Why Miss America finally eliminated the swimsuit competition

Just this morning, it was announced that the annual Miss America Pageant will no longer hold its iconic swimsuit competition.

She says that the group will make changes to the evening wear portion of the competition, adding it will not judge women on their chosen attire.

Carlson says that the pageant wants to be "open, transparent and inclusive to women who may not have felt comfortable participating in our program before". "But look, we have always had talent and scholarship and we need to message that particular of the program better as well".

Ashlee Baracy, Miss Michigan, Ellen Carrington, Miss Tennessee, Nicole Fox, Miss Hawaii, Jackie Geist, Miss California, and Chasity Hardman, Miss Georgia, compete in the gown competition during the 2009 Miss America Pageant, Jan. 24, 2009, in Las Vegas. Vincent-Tripp was Miss America 1991.

- Amanda Lewis (@AmandaLewis323) June 5, 2018So by eliminating judging based on appearance, as well as removing the swimsuit competition, Miss America will end up being a very boring version of "America's Got Talent".

Instead of the swimming costume segment, there will be interviews with the contenders, who will be asked about their passion, intelligence and understanding of the Miss America role.

In another first, all three leaders are former pageant winners in the Miss America system.

To see if the 2019 Miss America Competition follows through on Carlson and the organization's hopes, tune in on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC. "For many years that's been a part of the Miss America organization", Pitts said.

The Crocodile Specialist Group estimates that Nile crocodiles are responsible for more than 300 attacks in Africa each year. His body was later recovered from the water with bite marks on his back, legs and hands, according to local reports.

The Miss America Twitter account celebrated the announcement with a Tweet tagged with the hashtag #byebikini, and featuring a clip of a white bikini bursting into dust.

They are dropping the swimsuit competition in favor of an interactive session between judges and contestants in what's being called "Miss America 2.0".

The changes will go into effect for this year's contest, scheduled for September 9.

Carlson said that both the swimsuit and evening gown portions of the almost century-old competition would be scrapped.

She said: "I never thought I'd be the chairwoman of the Miss America Organisation, but here I am and we're moving it forward and we're evolving in this cultural revolution".

As for the women who threw bras and girdles into the garbage can on the Atlantic City boardwalk a half-century ago - and then infiltrated the event itself, draping a giant bedsheet from the balcony that read "Women's Liberation" - they watched with wonder, and a healthy dose of skepticism.

"There are tons of women across this country who are not "swimsuit-ready" who are doing some really bad-ass stuff in their communities", she said.
