Facebook bug set 14 million users’ sharing settings to public

"It will take some time to work through all the changes we need to make across the company", Zuckerberg said on the first day of hearings.

As Recode points out, the private/public setting on Facebook will be the same for new posts as it was on previous ones.

A statement attributed to Facebook chief privacy officer Erin Egan read, "we recently found a bug that automatically suggested posting publicly when some people were creating their Facebook posts".

The news follows a recent furor over Facebook's sharing of user data with device makers, including China's Huawei. Affected users will see a "Please review your posts" pop-up in their Facebook feed so they can review what private details might have leaked.

For a few days last month, a software bug caused 14 million Facebook users' default setting for sharing content to be "public", meaning that some of their posts meant to be kept private were accessible to anyone on the internet, the company said Thursday.

Neuer finally makes Germany comeback but bad weather delays kick-off against Austria
He said: "We played decent football at times in the first half, but then we just stopped clicking". We have a lot to work on over the next two weeks".

Facebook is now in the process of rolling out new privacy menus to all of its 2 billion users. If users did not notice the new default suggestion, they unwittingly sent their post to a broader audience than they had intended.

The company is also still recovering from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a Trump-affiliated data-mining firm got access to the personal data of as many as 87 million Facebook users.

The mistake happened, that company said, when it was building a new way for people to share "featured items" on their profiles. For a bug to break that system for millions of users is yet another major problem Facebook is going to have to deal with.

For those who are affected, Facebook will be displaying privacy notifications that appear when a user logs into Facebook via the web or mobile app.

A Facebook spokesperson said the notification is the start of new proactive and transparent way for the company to handle issues going forward.
