Macron, Trudeau support 'strong multilateralism' ahead of G7

"Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers", Trump wrote.

"In this environment, above all we always have to stay polite, stay productive and try to convince (them), to keep the United States on board because they are our historical ally and we need them", Macron told a news conference held with Trudeau in Ottawa on Friday. Trump told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a phone call on May 25, sources familiar with the discussion told CNN.

Canada, the No. 1 steel exporter to the United States, said last week it would impose retaliatory tariffs on CUS$16.6 billion (9.55 billion pounds) worth of us exports and challenge the usa steel and aluminium tariffs under the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization. "And we don't want there to be one".

"Macron added that other nations don't mind if the US goes its own way".

Trump, who has vowed to protect USA industry and workers from what he describes as unfair worldwide competition as part of an "America First" agenda, is due to hold bilateral meetings with Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron during the summit, Kudlow said.

The Trump administration used an old trade law from 1962 to justify the tariffs as a national security issue. Trump is said to have shot back.

Canada in particular has been outraged by Trump's tariffs, taking umbrage at the argument that they were motivated by national security concerns.

Trump bragged at a fundraising speech later that month that he made up facts in a meeting with Trudeau, claiming the USA runs a trade deficit with its biggest ally.

Chinas willing to boost imports if USA meets half-way on trade
Citing national security concerns, Trump leveled a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% duty on aluminum last month. The G7 are the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Germany, France and Italy.

Macron had so far taken a more conciliatory tone with Trump, whom he calls his "friend".

The U.S. announced tariffs on Canadian and Mexican steel and aluminum after talks stalled on a renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Or maybe they're just dizzy from the on-again, off-again trade war inside Trump's divided economic team.

And Trudeau, the summit's host, said Sunday that the tariffs were "insulting" to the longstanding alliance between the United States and Canada.

Now that they've gotten everyone's attention, it would be good if the Trump administration's next move is constructive.

In Washington, Trump economic advisor Larry Kudlow told reporters that Trump would press ahead with global tariffs on steel, and allies including Canada and the European Union should not expect exemptions. In 2017, it was the second-largest importer of US steel and steel products, which will now face an additional 25 percent tariff, in line with what the USA has imposed.

Mr Trump himself is reportedly unhappy at having to attend the G7, coming on the eve of his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

Officials in Brussels, who are leading the member states' response, said nations had given broad support for a plan to set duties on €2.8bn (£2.5bn) of U.S. exports. "There were no Canadian troops involved whatsoever", Grodzinski said as she reacted to the CNN report.
