Trump Aide Larry Kudlow Calls Justin Trudeau Trade Comments A 'Betrayal'

The Trump administration confirmed on May 31 it would apply additional tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, Mexico and European Union countries, ending a two-month exemption period. His tweet also accused the prime minister of being "dishonest and weak", and claimed that he only placed tariffs on aluminum and steel in response to Canada's "270% on dairy!" "And we don't want there to be one", the French leader said during a joint press conference Trudeau in Ottawa.

Responding to a question from CTV Ottawa Bureau Chief Joyce Napier, Freeland said that, for her, "the most important thing is deeds rather than words", adding that Canada plans to retaliate against US tariffs on steel and aluminum starting on July 1, something she says Canada is "doing out of sorrow".

Ontario premier-designate Doug Ford is also among those setting aside his political differences with Trudeau, re-asserting today that he stands "shoulder to shoulder" with the prime minister on trade.

Having left the G7 summit in Canada early, Mr Trump's announcement on Twitter that he was backing out of the joint communique torpedoed what appeared to be a fragile consensus on a trade dispute between Washington and its top allies.

The chancellor also announced during Sunday's interview that, just like Canada, the European Union was also preparing counter-measures to Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs.

The Americans negotiated with the G7 leaders in good faith and were ready to support the final communiqué and then, as Kudlow recounted, "We get on the plane and then this guy Trudeau starts blasting us".

The U.S. had a $17.5 billion goods trade deficit with Canada - its second-largest goods trading partner - in 2017, though it did have a goods and services trade surplus of $8.4 billion a year ago with its fellow North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) member, according to data from the U.S. Trade Representative's office.

"I don't know anything about that", Kudlow said. "It's a betrayal. Essentially double-crossing", he said. "But I don't see any fundamental problem in the Canadian-American trade relationship".

Trudeau criticized tariffs imposed by Trump and said: "Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around". This will be the first time a sitting U-S president meets with a North Korean leader.

"[Trump] is not gonna let a Canadian prime minister push him around. on the eve of [the North Korea summit]", Kudlow said.

Asked about Navarro's comments, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said, according to reporter Daniel Dale, "Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks".

"Canada is the biggest single purchaser of USA goods and services in the world", he noted, stressing that the US runs a trade surplus with Canada.

Trump announced yesterday that he would be renouncing support of the joint communique made at the end of the summit, which was a declaration of shared values and goals by the seven countries - the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan - that attended.
