White House adviser says Canada's Trudeau 'stabbed us in the back'

Although Trump said the trade talk was "not contentious", his comments come amid a tense few days with multiple world leaders over Trump's decision to impose steel and aluminum tariffs on the country's biggest trading partners: Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

CITY-President Donald Trump told the Group of Seven (G7) leaders that there should be no tariffs and barriers among the G7 countries, during the summit in La Malbaie, Quebec.

Trump's bombshell announcement that he was backing out of the Group of Seven communique, made after he left the summit in Canada early, torpedoed what appeared to be a fragile consensus on the trade dispute between Washington and its top allies.

Trump, who repeated that his tariffs are meant to protect US industry and workers from unfair worldwide competition, told reporters he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated.

Within minutes of the official release of the document, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter over what he described as the prime minister's "false statements" during the closing news conference - and the president announced the US would no longer endorse the communique.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte arrives in Canada for the G7.

Trudeau said he had told Trump that the talks had been made more complicated by a USA decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, ostensibly for national security reasons.

"The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades, and we can't do that anymore", Trump said.

Heading into the leaders' summit in the Quebec town of La Malbaie, there were deep concerns the G7 was fast becoming a G6 plus one because of a widening gulf between the US and the rest of the group in key areas such as climate and trade.

Trump revealed that the US team had worked "very well" with the representatives from Pyongyang during the bilateral preparatory talks for the summit.

I think it is going to be very positive.

The EU has pledged its own set of retaliatory tariffs, which would come into force next month and target American exports such as bourbon whiskey and jeans.

Highlighting the scale of the differences between Western allies, for the first time in G7 history there were doubts on whether the summit would end a final joint communique.

Apart from trade, there also was disagreement over the G7's position on climate change and Trump's suggestion that Russian Federation be re-admitted to the group.

On Friday, European Council President Donald Tusk said Trump's criticism of the global rules-based order is "playing into the hands of those who seek a new post-West order where liberal democracy and fundamental freedoms would cease to exist".

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote ahead of the meeting on his profile: "The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a six country agreement if need be".

Trump will travel directly to Singapore from Canada to attend the meeting. "And we don't want there to be one", Macron said.
