Theresa May admits 'candid and difficult' G7 summit after Donald Trump row

President Donald Trump's fight with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau not only threatens to unravel the US's relationship with one of its oldest worldwide partners - it could also significantly damage the U.S. economy.

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau engaged in a war of words after the G7 summit.

"My job was to send a signal of strength", he said at a Wall Street Journal CFO Network conference in Washington on Tuesday.

"I'm not sure what activity he's asking me to undertake with either", May said amid laughter.

In response to White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro's comment, "there's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy", European Council president Donald Tusk retorted on social media defending the Canadian Prime Minister by saying "there's a special place in heaven for Justin Trudeau".

Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, suggested that Trump saw Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before the summit with Kim. In tweets, Trump insulted Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak".

A boxing enthusiast who dons his gloves to work off the stress of the job in his rare free time, the Canadian prime minister will have to carefully measure his punches against the USA leader, who publicly accused him of weakness and dishonesty after the meeting of the G7 nations in Quebec at the weekend.

On Sunday, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland called the tariffs illegal and insulting. German Chancellor Merkel looks to be in a tense situation with Trump.

Asked if he was apologising, Navarro said, "yeah, absolutely". He didn't specify what he considered false about Trudeau's statements. "And Justin. And I said, "Oh that's nice, Justin's giving a" - And then he talked about how they won't be bullied". But despite the war of words, Trump insisted at the press conference in Singapore that the pair still "have a good relationship". That was when Trudeau said Canada would take retaliatory steps in response to steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by Trump on Canada and other allies.

At his closing G-7 press conference on Saturday, Trudeau called USA steel and aluminium tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs. And he urged Canada's industrial leaders to remain calm in the face of ongoing threats from the U.S president.

"We can no longer sit back and allow our allies to take advantage of us", he said. Trump imposed steep tariffs on steel and aluminum last month to rebalance trade, he said.

"The historic and important agreement we all reached at #G7Charlevoix will help make our economies stronger & people more prosperous, protect our democracies, safeguard our environment and protect women & girls' rights around the world", he wrote.

Trudeau was speaking at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron when the apparent eyebrow mishap occurred, with pictures appearing to show one eyebrow unusually lower than the other.

And Roland Paris, a former foreign policy adviser to Mr Trudeau, jabbed at Mr Trump on Twitter: "Big tough guy once he's back on his airplane. I know it didn't look friendly; it was reported as nasty both ways, I was angry with her - actually, we were just talking, the whole group, unrelated to everything, very friendly, waiting for the document to come back".
