Asian markets mixed ahead of Trump-Kim summit in Singapore

The meeting follows talks between the Singaporean Prime Minister Lee and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday: a meeting which saw Lee praise Kim's and Trump's "bold and admirable decision" to hold the summit.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is traveling to Singapore with Trump and is expected to travel to Japan, South Korea, and China directly following the summit to coordinate the outcome of the meeting with the regional allies.

He said more than one meeting with North Korea will be necessary to complete a meaningful deal, but the summit is a start.

Mr Trump's first year in office was marked by bitter exchanges with Mr Kim as North Korea conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of global warnings.

A source told the South China Morning Post earlier that China could send fighter jets to escort Kim on the journey through its airspace.
