Phil Mickelson freestyles hole 13 of US Open Championship

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. -Phil Mickelson, who's known for playing by the rules, stepped out of character on his birthday at the U.S. Open.

Mickelson, who turns 48 today, missed a bogey putt on the 13 before running the ball and hitting it again as it continued to roll away from the hole.

"I seen the ball go past, he ran and he hit it, and he said, 'I'll wait".

He signed for an 11-over-par 81 and a 17-over total. I mean, you want to always use them in your favour.

What's unclear is why Mickelson lost his mind.

Mickelson knocked in a five-footer for par and then raised his arms in a vintage-Phil celebration, mocking the spectacle he put on a day earlier. Mickelson was intentionally taking advantage of the rule whereas Daly swatted at the ball as it rolled back to him out of what he later admitted was frustration at the USGA over the placement of the hole on the 8th hole.

If you're wondering whether Mickelson would be defiant or contrite on Sunday, we don't know the answer.

As the biggest bridesmaid in U.S. Open history with a record six runner-up finishes, one of those coming at this same (but different) Shinnecock Hills course back in 2004, Phil Mickelson had to be a bit frustrated coming into his third round.

USA politicians not yet toasting Trump-Kim summit
The US president said he had, and did not retract his description of Mr Kim as "talented". "You saw the tape today", Trump said. Peter's Square in prayer June 10, expressing hopes the summit would lead to lasting peace.

In a day that may have otherwise been remembered for the playing conditions, Mickelson provided a freaky and unexpected moment. It'll be the surreal image of Mickelson jogging to get behind a ball rolling down a hill, having made the decision to wilfully break one of the simplest Rules of Golf: you can not hit a moving ball.

"I feel his pain, because everyone was having hard on the course today, but there definitely was a better way to handle it", Mr. Lilly, of Bronxville, said, but agreeing that Mickelson should not have been ejected from the tournament. "I gladly take the two-shot penalty".

The player added: "It's certainly not meant to disrespect the championship".

"I've never seen anything like that from a world-class player in my life", odd said.

"In that situation, I was just going back and forth".

"I said 'That's one of the strangest things I've ever seen". "I know it is a two-shot penalty".

However you look at it, it was the kind of thing a 5-year-old does on a bad hole on a miniature golf course.

"That can happen, [but] that's not what we operated under here, " Bodenamer said.
