U.S. withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

Critics say this sends a message that the administration turns a blind eye to human rights abuses in some parts of the world.

Haley has been the driving force behind withdrawing from the human rights body, which is unprecedented in the 12-year history of the council.

A USA departure would deprive Israel of its chief defender at a forum where Israel's human rights record comes up for discussion at every single meeting, a standing "Item 7" on the agenda.

Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, added: "The Secretary-General would have much preferred for the United States to remain in the Human Rights Council". "That undermines our standing in the world and allows our adversaries to fill the void".

'This decision is counterproductive to American national security and foreign policy interests and will make it more hard to advance human rights priorities and aid victims of abuse around the world, ' the organisations said in a joint statement.

Pompeo named China, Cuba, and Venezuela as some of the worst human rights abusers who sit on the council.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, called on Washington to halt its "unconscionable" policy.

Gaming addiction declared a mental disorder
Of course, gaming industry spokespeople aren't happy about this draft, which if passed, would come into effect in May 2019. Games like Fortnite are more popular than ever, but they may also have renewed fears that games are damaging young minds.

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted a statement: "Today the US took a stand against some of the world's worst human rights violators by withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council".

The United States has announced its departure from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), an extremist U.N. body that promotes dictatorships, supports Islamist regimes, and empowers the world's most ruthless human rights abusers.

The George W. Bush administration boycotted the council at its inception, but the Obama administration made a decision to "re-engage" with the body in 2009. The UN resolution creating the council provides that any successor would be another country from the group that includes Western Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel. "She also criticized countries which shared USA values and encouraged Washington to remain but 'were unwilling to seriously challenge the status quo'".

In May, the U.S. Human rights are universal and should be applied universally and not in such a nakedly biased way.

The Trump administration's irritation with the council makeup and its agenda has been telegraphed with drumbeat regularity by Haley.

The move comes as little surprise from an administration that frequently has lambasted the 47-member body for a gamut of perceived failures - including what Haley has called the council's "relentless, pathological campaign" against Israel, a staunch USA ally. During a five-year "review" to fix the Council back in 2011, the Obama administration pushed for membership reform as well. Israel's ambassador in Geneva attacked the council for "spreading lies against Israel". On one day alone in March, the council passed five resolutions condemning Israel. United Nations officials privately confirmed they were expecting the USA decision to quit the rights body. Because of our seat at the table, we've been able to give voice to the voiceless around the world while fighting for the council's fair treatment of our allies like Israel.

Some analysts praised the decision, including Brett Schaefer of the Heritage Foundation, who credited the US with taking a "measured approach".
