New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gives birth to baby girl

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gives birth to baby girl

"Feeling very lucky to have a healthy baby girl that arrived at 4.45pm weighing 3.31 kg (7.3 lb)".

She plans to take six weeks off work, during which time Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters will cover for her.

Mr Gayford will take care of the baby and will travel with Ms Ardern between their Auckland home and the capital, Wellington, as well on worldwide engagements.

Ardern follows Pakistan's former prime minister Benazir Bhutto as only the second world leader to give birth in power, after Bhutto's pregnancy in 1990.

James Shaw, the leader of New Zealand's Green Party, which is a member of New Zealand's ruling coalition with Ardern's Labour Party and New Zealand First, said the birth of the prime minister's child represented New Zealand values.

She added: 'We're all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital'.

Bakhtawar tweeted "congratulations" to Ardern after the announcement, and shared a link to a news story on how Bhutto showed it was possible to be a mother and a prime minister.

Jordan won the prize for his performance as Killmonger in Black Panther , which he said he was shocked to win. God loves you, God wants the best for you". "You can live your dreams and you can be yourself".

Ardern posted the news on her Instagram account along with a photo of the newborn and her partner. However, there's been a lot of talk about her temporary replacement, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, a highly experienced, but sometimes polarising figure. In my view, New Zealand is showing that no doors are closed to women, that having a baby while being prime minister can be managed, and that it's acceptable for male partners to be full-time carers.

New Zealanders have been waiting in excitement for the baby's arrival, which was due on Sunday. Coincidentally, Ardern's baby shares the same June 21 birthday as Bhutto.

"Plenty of women have multitasked before me, and I want to acknowledge that", she said when announcing her pregnancy in January.

These are the kinds of practical arrangements working women make the world over - the novelty here is that it is a prime minister who is making them.

At the conference, Ardern was asked how choosing a baby name was going and she responded "terribly" before asking the gathered media for suggestions.

"I also think there are women every day who manage of all of these things - I just manage to do my job in a public way and I happen to have probably more people than most around me supporting me".
