Methodists rebuke Jeff Sessions, bring Church charges against him over immigration policy

Beauregard SessionsDOJ requests military lawyers to help prosecute immigration crimes: report Trump backs down in rare reversal Senate moving ahead with border bill, despite Trump MORE said on Thursday that the Trump administration "never really intended" to separate migrant children from their parents when he issued its aggressive crackdown on immigration prosecutions.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions (C) and fellow members of President Donald Trump's cabinet bow their heads in prayer during an event to mark the National Day of Prayer in the Rose Garden at the White House May 3, 2018 in Washington, DC. When families cross the border that has meant that parents are taken to federal custody while the children are handed over to the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

"What's happening on the border is having a direct impact on what's happening in New Jersey", New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said in a statement.

In a letter to Sessions, the bipartisan group says that under previous administrations prosecutors used their discretion to decide if people who crossed the border illegally should be charged or go through a civil process to determine if they qualify for asylum, which would allow the family unit to stay together.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended the Trump administration policy of separating families at the border, declaring "this country is dedicated to caring for children" and stressing how much is being spent on their room and board.

Sessions said he had not anticipated the backlash generated by the "zero tolerance" immigration policy and the anger over moving as many as 2,000 immigrant children into detention centers without their parents.

Heading the Justice Department has given him new power to shape immigration policy, and he has in some ways become the face of the Trump administration's tough approach.

"The law does not require the systematic separation of families under these circumstances", the letter reads. "Take action and bring down crime".

U.S. withdraws from UN Human Rights Council
Critics say this sends a message that the administration turns a blind eye to human rights abuses in some parts of the world. During a five-year "review" to fix the Council back in 2011, the Obama administration pushed for membership reform as well.

Jenkins' office said the separations highlight the need to pass immigration reform in order to put an end to "this terrible policy". The Dems included Senator Ron Wyden who was also at an OR federal prison this weekend to criticize the government for holding 123 asylum seekers since mid-May.

"Treating children as prisoners, depriving them of their basic right to be with their families, is not biblical in any way", Haggray said.

When Mr. Trump in Septemberended a program that shielded young immigrants from deportation, he left the announcement to Mr. Sessions, who was willing to absorb the political fallout.

"There's an important conversation in this country about whether we want to be a country of laws or if we want to be a country without borders", Sessions said.

"Splitting children from parents is inhumane, and we can do better as a nation", she said.

"It is painful", Sessions said.

Faith leaders of all persuasions, including the leader of Sessions' own church, have denounced the policy.
