Obama, Biden slam Trump family separation policy as immoral

President Trump and his administration have spent the last week publicly and relentlessly defending the administration's "zero-tolerance" policy that has caused the separation of children from their parents at the southern border.

Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen unapologetic re: policy of separating children from parents at border: "We have a duty to protect the American people..." Trump said his daughter, Ivanka, had told him the situation with the families looks bad, one lawmaker said.

In an interview with Reuters news agency, Pope Francis said he supported recent statements by US Catholic bishops who called the policy "contrary to our Catholic values" and "immoral".

Faso, who is running unopposed for his second term in a district Trump won in 2016, said the president could take action immediately to end the separations.

It's unclear how long it will take for Trump's order to be implemented. Trump told House Republicans on Tuesday night he would support either of the immigration bills under consideration but did not give a preference. Expanded facilities could be key, as migrant children separated from their parents are now housed by a different department, Health and Human Services.

"The idea that the way to end family separation is to indefinitely jail kids with their parents in family gulags at the border is as morally reprehensible as separating kids from their parents", said Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice, an immigration advocacy group".

Doctors and lawyers who have visited the shelters in South Texas' Rio Grande Valley said the facilities were fine, clean and safe, but the children, who have no idea where their parents are, were hysterical, crying and acting out. The official did not know what prompted Trump to change course.

Methodists rebuke Jeff Sessions, bring Church charges against him over immigration policy
Trump in Septemberended a program that shielded young immigrants from deportation, he left the announcement to Mr. Faith leaders of all persuasions, including the leader of Sessions' own church , have denounced the policy.

The major change being unveiled Tuesday would loosen rules that now limit the amount of time minors can be held to 20 days, according to a GOP source familiar with the measure. Under the Obama administration, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation. The children are taken to shelters around the country while case workers try to find them suitable sponsors.

Since early May, soon after Sessions's zero-tolerance policy announcement, at least 2,300 children have been separated from their families at the border.

The national outcry has roiled midterm election campaigns, emboldening Democrats while putting Republicans on the defensive.

US First Ladies (from left) Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Melania Trump, Rosalynn Carter and Laura Bush, have independently expressed their concern about migrant children being torn from parents at the US-Mexico border.

In the past, families with children caught after crossing the border illegally were allowed to stay together while their immigration cases played out in court.

Trump's remarks came shortly after House Republican leaders vowed to bring broader immigration legislation up for votes on Thursday (Friday NZT) to address the crisis, despite widespread scepticism that a bill could pass.

The compromise bill in the House shifts away from the nation's longtime preference for family immigration to a new system that prioritizes entry based on merits and skills.
