Every player rated as Croatia triumph in tense penalty shoot-out against Denmark

Mathias Jorgensen put the Danes ahead inside the first minute in Sunday's last-16 tie in Nizhny Novgorod, but Mario Mandzukic quickly brought Croatia level.

Denmark took the lead with only a minute on the clock, Jonas Knudsen's long throw causing havoc and Mathias Jorgensen's scuffed shot only helped in off the post by keeper Danijel Subasic.

Croatia's Dejan Lovren, Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic and teammates during training.

"Kasper did all he could to ensure we won the match, both in extra time and the penalty shootout", he said.

The match has been billed as a one-on-one battle between Modric and Eriksen, the star midfielders of their respective sides who have each impressed in Russian Federation.

Croatia will next face host Russian Federation in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Sochi.

Though Croatia are favourites on Sunday, and are some people's surprise pick to win the whole tournament, coach Zlatko Dalic said Denmark's solid team play and strong defence should not be under-estimated.

Denmark striker Yussuf Poulsen is back from suspension and is expected to be named in Hareide's starting line-up. When Ivan Rakitić calmly buried the decisive penalty, the fans in Croatia immediately ignited flares to start one insane party.

The two European sides traded absolutely silly goals in the first four minutes of their elimination match. But Denmark, unbeaten in 18 games coming into the game, provided tough opposition. A low scoring, methodically played match will play to Denmark's advantage. "Relationships and tactics get better", he explained.

Croatia have reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for only the second time after 1998.

The Danes have not lost in their last 18 Federation Internationale de Football Association sanctioned matches and will be looking to their playmaker, Christian Eriksen, to open up Croatia, who have conceded just one goal so far in Russia. But Jorgensen saved what would have surely been a goal, and then his goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel came to the rescue.

Fans will be waiting to see who comes out on top between Modric, and Christian Eriksen, Denmark's standout player.

The defender added that he is very proud to captain his national team in the World Cup, and hopes Denmark can go as far as possible in the tournament.
