Little sign of compromise in German govt showdown

Seehofer, also leader of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), made the remarks after a hours-long meeting with the leadership of the sister party Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Merkel. It has once again become clear that it is worth fighting for a conviction.

The CSU's leadership were tight-lipped as they arrived at their party's Munich headquarters to discuss Merkel's deals.

Seehofer's threat to resign came after Merkel's Christian Democrats passed a resolution Sunday supporting her position on migration.

But even with a last-minute agreement between the two sibling parties would leave Merkel with some political firefighting to do in order to fully defuse the government crisis. That means 355 are required for a majority, which is needed in a confidence vote or to elect a new chancellor, and Merkel's coalition has 399.

CDU general secretary Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said in Berlin party leaders were "united" behind "effective, humane solutions together with our European partners".

Seehofer, who reportedly argues that measures to tackle migration agreed at an European Union summit last week aren't enough, said early Monday he would hold talks during the day with the CDU.

Germany's interior minister was expected to hold talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel's party on Monday after offering his resignation in a bitter dispute over migration policy, but there was little sign of a possible compromise.

While averting an immediate crisis, the plan also raised new questions - especially when it comes to Italy, the main arrival country for migrants crossing the Mediterranean.

Seehofer, leader of the Christian Social Union, had been in a standoff with Merkel over his plan to turn back at Germany's borders any asylum-seekers who had registered in another European Union country.

Artem Dzyuba then converted a penalty three minutes before the break to pull the tournament hosts level at half-time. The heavens opened up with five minutes left on the clock to add to the drama, which would be decided on penalties.

But instead he and Ms Merkel have agreed on setting up detention centres on Germany's border with Austria that will process immigrants and return them if necessary. The German leader would not comment Sunday on the talks. The AfD that swept into Parliament previous year on a wave of anti-migrant sentiment is staging a march Sunday through the heart of Berlin to protest against the government.

That left him with only three options.

Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder too appeared to indicate a willingness to cut Seehofer loose for the sake of the coalition.

Meanwhile for Merkel's troops, "the image of the country, our ability to act and our ability to govern" were at stake, said economy minister and close Merkel ally Peter Altmaier. The CSU exists only in Bavaria, the CDU in Germany's 15 other states. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

The CDU is marginally down nationally to 26%, the poll indicates.

If Seehofer goes ahead with his policies, the dispute could end the decades-old conservative alliance between the CSU and Merkel's CDU.

One said: "Merkel's millennium is petering out".

The compromise ended the "sister dispute" developed for nearly three years since the 2015 refugee crisis when Merkel chose to open German border for refugees.
