SpaceX Propels AI-powered Robot To Assist Astronauts In The Cosmos

Launched today at 5:42 a.m. ET on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, the Dragon resupply spacecraft is carrying more than 5,900 pounds of research equipment, cargo, and supplies. Using its 14 internal fans, CIMON can accelerate toward any astronaut calling its name and can appear to "nod" to show understanding of a command.

The Verge describes CIMON as something that resembles "a volleyball with a computer screen on one side", while FOX News has likened it to HAL-9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey movie.

Once aboard, CIMON-short for Crew Interactive MObile companioN-will assist the crew with its many activities.

A project in the works for the past two years, CIMON has been trained to recognize the voice and face of Alexander Gerst, 42, a geophysicist with the European Space Agency.

It is expected to dock with the International Space Station next week. On Monday, July 2, the ISS received its first artificial intelligence robot, and as a bonus, was also graced with berries, ice cream, and brown mice.

The Trump administration's move does not change the law on affirmative action. Affirmative action, a heated issue, has been revisited by the U.S.

Cimon has Gerst's face and voice imprinted in its memory.

The unmanned Dragon capsule carried 5,900 pounds (2,700 kilograms) on its 15th supply mission to the orbiting lab, as part of a $1.6 billion contract with NASA.

In addition, CIMON will be a first robot which makes interactions with people in space. The second is for CIMON to look at a Rubik's cube through its camera and give Gerst instructions for how to solve it.

"What we're trying to do with CIMON is to increase the efficiency of the astronaut", Matthias Biniok, an IBM engineer one of the the robots's lead architects, told Reuters. "The crew's going to be opening up and eating blueberries, drinking coffee and eating ice cream, I'm sure, before you know it".

Researchers hope that with its face, voice and artificial intelligence, it will become a genuine "colleague" on board, helping astronauts with their daily routines, and warning of any impending problems - much like the HAL robot in Stanley Kubrick's 2001 was created to do. Cimon will tell you what tool is best to use for the fix of a particular piece, as well as inform about possible faults in the system. It is scheduled to return to Earth on December 13, according to the BBC.
