Serena Williams talks about post-baby weight loss and breastfeeding

In an interview with journalists ahead of playing at Wimbledon this week the 36-year-old mother of one said she'd thought breastfeeding would help her slim down, but in fact the opposite happened. Chris Evert won in Wimbledon in 1974 and 1976, before she was married, and is listed as "Miss". The neutral "Ms." is never used, nor is "Mr." used for men.

Serena Williams doesn't like being away from her daughter, but admits going back to work is "healthy" for her. It's an odd tradition that some complain is a gender inequity in need of change, while others simply shrug it off.

Asked about her improved performance from the second set and whether it confirmed her form as she seeks a second consecutive final and sixth title, she said: "It's just about winning a match, whether it's your best (tennis) or not doesn't matter".

Even if female tennis players do decide to take their husband's last name in competition, the board of champions still lists them using their husband's initials and last name.

While the Centre Court crowd clearly appreciated the sight of Williams in full flow, they also took a shine to the plucky Tomova who battled hard to make a match of it. He scoured decades of newspapers, mostly on microfiche, and made note of every match played on Wimbledon's two main show courts from 1993 to 2017.

Nadal heads into the third round
Barty came back from 2-5 down in the second set to see off 2014 runner-up Bouchard who came through qualifying this year. No. 9 seed Williams lost to No. 20 Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-7 (5), 8-6 in the third round on Friday.

She admitted: "I literally sat Olympia in my arms, I talked to her, we prayed about it". And it won't be until next year that the women's qualifying tournament will have the same number of spots as the men's.

Still the increasingly competitive nature of the contest was relished by Williams, who let out a roar after a cross-court backhand victor brought up another break point that Tomova saved, before applauding the 23-year-old as she survived a match point and forced her to successfully serve it out. Joyce Barclay, who reached the women's doubles semifinals at Wimbledon in 1972, is credited with five marriages. "Hopefully, it's just one", she said, laughing.

According to, Serena's valued at $180 million-which, wow, but also, it's Serena Williams, so we can't be too surprised.

But the American, the runner-up at Wimbledon a year ago, then won seven games in a row.
