Fernando Hierro steps down as Spain coach

Fernando Hierro will not continue as Spain coach, or return to his previous role as sporting director, following the World Cup, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed.

Fernando Hierro, previously the RFEF's sporting director, took over on a temporary basis for the tournament, but has not continued following Spain's disappointing showing in Russian Federation.

The 48-year-old will have the tough task of reviving a national team deflated after three consecutive failures at major tournaments, the latest their World Cup loss to hosts Russian Federation - ranked 70th in the world - on penalties in the last 16.

The president of Spain's football federation Luis Rubiales revealed in a press conference on Monday that the decision to hire Luis Enrique was unanimous, saying the 48-year-old met all of the criteria.

Fernando Hierro was given the job on a caretaker basis, to at least initially see Spain through this summer's World Cup.

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez and former Spain internationals Michel and Quique Sanchez Flores had been considered contenders for the position but Luis Enrique was the No. 1 choice.

Luis Enrique is set to replace Fernando Hierro.

Luis Enrique has played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as managing Celta Vigo, Roma, and winning the Champions League with Barcelona in 2014/15. He followed it up with a domestic double in the 2015-16 campaign.

Before Enrique's last match as coach, Pique, a Barcelona mainstay, said: "He is one of the best coaches in history, we have won everything and these three years have been magnificent".
