Roger Federer ditches Nike for Uniqlo

Roger Federer left Nike after 24 years and unveiled his new endorsement deal at Wimbledon.

Before stepping off the court, he gave his headband to a young female fan in the crowd - and joked he could be giving away a lot more before the fortnight is over.

Federer will be the biggest tennis player to partner with Uniqlo, who were the apparel sponsors of Novak Djokovic till 2017, after which he switched to Lacoste.

One of the most significant and high-profile sponsorships in world tennis, Roger Federer's affiliation with Nike, has ended on Monday after the Swiss was seen walking onto Centre Court at Wimbledon today sporting Japanese company Uniqlo rather than Nike.

Federer insists that he has not had a full divorce from Nike - hence the U.S. company's shoes on the feet of the 20-time grand slam victor.

"I think I don't play so many rallies".

And it won't be until next year that the women's qualifying tournament will have the same number of spots as the men's. It's an odd tradition that some complain is a gender inequity in need of change, while others simply shrug it off.

Murray's 2013 title at Wimbledon was the first for a British male in 77 years.

Third seed and last year's runner-up to Federer, Marin Cilic underlined his title credentials by smacking down 21 aces as he eased into the next round with a comfortable 6-1 6-4 6-4 win over Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

During last month's grasscourt event in Halle, Federer confirmed his deal with Nike had expired in March but he kept his arrangement with Uniqlo firmly under wraps until Monday.

But it was to be a familiar tale as the Swiss star began his quest for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon title in glorious sunshine with a crushing 6-1 6-3 6-4 victory over Lajovic to rally through to a second-round meeting against Lukas Lacko of Serbia or French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi.

While Federer was in cruise control on Centre Court, three top American ladies were on the next three stadium courts.

Williams came back to hold there and wouldn't drop another game the rest of the way, dealing better with the wind that whipped this way and that at No. 1 Court and marking terrific passing shots with those customary cries of "Come on!"
