England vs. Sweden final score, recap

England defied nearly three decades of disappointment to move confidently into the World Cup semifinals for the first time since 1990 as headers from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli downed a dogged but toothless Sweden 2-0.

Vanquished Sweden boss Janne Andersson suggested England were good enough to "go all the way" in Russian Federation, while Southgate believes there is much more to come from his youthful group of players.

His delivery for Maguire's goal was excellent and he provided width down England's left-hand side against a narrow and slow Swedish team.

"They are a good football side and they don't give a lot away".

"I gathered the players on the pitch and told them we had a bloody good tournament".

Sweden last reached the World Cup semifinals in 1994, and ended up finishing third.

Gareth Southgate's side recorded a comfortable victory over a limited Sweden side to set up a game against either Russian Federation or Croatia for a place in the World Cup final.

But Andersson said his team was just not good enough to beat Gareth Southgate's men, stating that his players tried their best "to even reach the competition's last eight stage".

"I am not sure anything went wrong, as such", he said.

Just as he had minimal time to reflect on his history-making contribution, so too do the rest of his team-mates as they ponder another impossibly high-stakes clash on Wednesday.

Swedish players applaud their fans after their loss to England. We've got to stay focused.

Fans have spilled out of pubs, parks and homes, coming together to celebrate their team's victory, after more than five decades of disappointment.

Though it was his first global goal, Maguire has been a risky target man from set pieces throughout the tournament, and he credited his teammates for delivering the ball in the right areas.

England promptly cranked up the pressure and pulled further ahead on 59 minutes when a completely unmarked Alli sent a thumping header past Olsen after a first-time cross by Jesse Lingard. The squad last won the World Cup in 1966.

"They are greater than the sum of their parts more often than not, so that is a hugely hard game for us".

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was notably called into action early in the second half when he saved Marcus Berg's header. I think if you say it's an easy game in a quarter-final of a World Cup then you are pretty stupid to say that.

England make it on Venezuela's national newspaper's backpage, with the headline "Semifinal Set".
