David Davis Gives His Instant Reaction As Boris Johnson Resigns

British Prime Minister Theresa May has won the support of senior ministers and an endorsement from Europe's most powerful leader, Angela Merkel, surviving the explosive resignations of two top cabinet members in protest at her Brexit plans.

"Productive cabinet meeting this morning - looking ahead to a busy week", May said on Twitter, as the resignations of Johnson and Davis sent shockwaves through Westminster and fuelled speculation that the turmoil could eventually topple her.

Caulfield's letter expressed a similar sentiment, adding: "Having attended the briefings provided for members of Parliament, I cannot support the direction of travel in the Brexit negotiations which, in my view, do not fully embrace the opportunities that Brexit can provide".

And former Conservative leader William Hague warned party rebels that voting against the Prime Minister's final deal could result in Brexit being indefinitely delayed or halted altogether.

An agreement was announced after the 12-hour meeting, but many Brexiteers have been unhappy with the deal which they think will lead to the "worst of both worlds".

Concessions on regulations would be off the table because Britain needs to remain aligned with strict European Union safety and environmental rules. "So I think that symbolises how he considers the importance of her leadership in this country right now". "It s a good thing that we have proposals on the table".

Rumours have swirled over possible further resignations but experts said Ms.

"I don t see them pulling the plug on her", Polly Mackenzie, director of cross-party think-tank Demos, told AFP.

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry tweeted: "Government resignations since autumn: 1 November 2017 - Fallon 8 November 2017 - Patel 20 December 2017 - Green 29 April 2018 - Rudd 8 January 2018 - Greening 8 July 2018 - Davis There have been six resignations in 249 days".

But while many Brexit campaigners were still hoping for a vote of confidence to oust May, it is unlikely that they have the numbers.

Downing Street made clear the PM would fight any attempt to oust her by rebel MPs.

The timing could not be worse, as Britain faces a fresh diplomatic row with Russian Federation over a nerve agent attack, and ahead of US President Donald Trump's visit this week.

Her plans, which also argue for Britain to set its own trade tariffs and open up services markets, are an attempt to meet the demands of businesses, pro-EU voters, Brexit supporters and the European Union, which has warned repeatedly that time is running out. 'There is a whole range of scenarios in which they get no Brexit, or an indefinitely delayed Brexit, or a change of government or a second referendum, ' he told Radio 4's Today programme.

Trump isn't expected to directly address Brexit, nor were he and Johnson scheduled to meet.

"Unfortunately his contribution to the development of bilateral ties with Russian Federation was rather modest, to put it mildly", President Vladimir Putin s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Mr. Johnson was quickly replaced by 51-year-old former Health Minister Jeremy Hunt, who unlike Mr. Johnson supported staying in the European Union in the 2016 referendum.

Earlier staunch Brexiteer Dominic Raab was named as Mr Davis's replacement as Secretary of State for Leaving the EU.

These firms would, of course, favour a "soft Brexit" as that will ensure continued access to the single market comprising the remaining 27 European Union states, and some have put expansion plans on hold until there is greater clarity on Britain's exit by March 2019.

Davis himself expressed regret that Johnson had quit, and said it would be "wrong" for his departure to trigger a major rebellion.

The White Paper, reportedly delayed for several months amid disagreements between ministers, was finally approved by Theresa May's cabinet at her country residence, Chequers, last week.
