Donald Trump visit: How Americans living in the United Kingdom feel

Mr. Trump may have ruffled feathers again when he said just before departing for Europe that the United Kingdom was in "turmoil", suggesting it was "up to the people" to decide if Prime Minister Theresa May remains in power after a few days that saw her authority challenged by the resignation of two prominent Cabinet ministers protesting her Brexit policy.

The President and First Lady Melania Trump landed at London Stansted Airport, northeast of the capital, where they boarded a helicopter to Winfield House.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who signed off on the so-called "baby Trump" blimp, defended the decision Thursday, arguing the protests were not anti-American but emblematic of free speech.

"It's really kind of irrelevant to what we're trying to do and I don't think certainly it doesn't express the opinion of the British people I met", he said. You see what's going on throughout the world with immigration. I think that " s why Brexit happened".

"Brexit is Brexit, the people voted to break it up so I would imagine that is what they'll do, but they might take a different route, I'm not sure that's what people voted for", Trump said, adding: "They're great people - I just want them to be happy".

Mr Trump has recently been under fire for his immigration police which saw the separation of immigrant families and caused wide-spread anger.

Later, asked about Theresa May's plan for leaving the European Union, he echoed the British Prime Minister's own words that "Brexit should mean Brexit".

He was met at Stansted Airport by dignitaries including International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and the USA ambassador Woody Johnson.

After the dinner, the Trumps will travel to the US ambassador's official residence, Winfield House in London's Regent's Park, where they will spend the night.

Prime Minister Theresa May will host Mr Trump and his wife Melania at a dinner at Blenheim Palace this evening.

When asked about the demonstrations, he replied: "It's fine".

Trump's calls prompted leaders to call an emergency meeting at the summit Thursday, which delayed a session during which North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders had meant to discuss the Afghan conflict.

Johnson added that the President "appreciates free speech" and that he was "very focused on the special relationship" between the U.S. and the UK.

The leaders are also expected to discuss Russia, Brexit and the Middle East.

The people who started the campaign say that the balloon is a means to ensure that Trump "knows that all of Britain is looking down on him and laughing at him".

When he leaves Britain on Sunday, after a trip to Scotland where he owns two golf courses, he heads to Helsinki for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

When he arrives today, Trump will be taken to Blenheim Palace, the 300-year-old birthplace of Churchill.

Only one person, the digital entrepreneur and philanthropist Baroness Martha Lane-Fox, has publicly refused the invitation.

Police are planning to face 100,000 protesters in London during President Trump's four-day visit to Britain.

"UK and USA special forces will be involved in a demonstration which will involve a counter-terrorism scenario and an outdoor capabilities demonstration showing equipment that the [British] special forces use when they conduct joint operations with their U.S. counterparts", a statement from Downing Street read.
